Overview of smart watches Huawei Watch 3: a full -fledged operating system, phone calls with ESIM and control wheel

The Harmony OS 2.0 operating system, which recently debuted on the Huawei Mediapad Pro, got to smart hours.Huawei Watch 3 is the first representative of this type of device in several years, offering functionality at the level of the most advanced and expensive competitors. On them, you can install third -party applications, take and make calls using ESIM, automatically control the saturation of blood with oxygen and track body temperature. However, there are nuances.

Before moving on to testing and compared with competitors, we must decide what exactly we mean by smart clock and how this model differs from many others presented in the assortment of the same Huawei.

All smart watches can be conditionally divided into two categories. The first is models with limited functionality, in fact representing fitness trackers in a case with a large screen. The second is full -function smart watches on which an operating system with an application store is installed, including third -party ones. There are very few examples of the second category, because, obviously, such a product is much more difficult to develop and much more. In addition, there were only three corresponding operating systems until recently: Watchos, Tizen and Wear OS (previously called Android Wear).

The same Huawei had a model on Android Wear - just Huawei Watch 2, released back in 2017.And at some point it seemed that Android Wear could well repeat the success of the Google smartphone OS.The models on it were released by LG, Motorola and some other manufacturers. However, everything turned out differently: the OS has almost died, and the companies that made it a bet either completely abandoned the creation of smart watches, or decided to limit themselves to the functionality of fitness scraps. One would think that Huawei was from the category of second, and the release of Watch GT series confirmed this.

However, now Huawei is returning to the market of full -functional smart watches with a model based on its own OS.And, judging by the characteristics, she has something to contrast the flagships of competitors.

It is clearly seen that the Huawei watch is large, the resolution and density of the points are high.Another big plus of the novelty is the presence of ESIM with LTE support, in this Watch 3 does not have a single opponent. If we talk about sensors, then Huawei Watch 3 has a constant measurement of oxygen in the blood and temperature of the skin of the body (which is the difference from the usual concept of body temperature - we will tell you later), but there is no measurement of the ECG.

We add that we indicated in the table the characteristics of the version C without the suffix Pro.The difference is Pro - in materials, mass and dimensions.Instead of stainless steel, a titanium alloy is used there, as a result, the model is heavier and a little larger (thickness - 14 mm).But this does not affect the size of the screen and other aspects.

Equipment

The clock is delivered in a spectacular black box, setting up to meet a solid expensive device.

Inside the box, the clock is located in a cardboard slot, and since they are reliably protected from all sides, the risk of damage during transportation is minimal.

The equipment, however, is modest. In addition to the device itself, this is only a warranty booklet, a card with a QR code for loading the Huawei Health application and wireless charging with USB-A at the end of the wire.

Charging is more convenient than that of many other smart watches, since there are no contacts on it and the clock can be placed on it as you like - the gadget’s back is easily primagnetized with any orientation of the device.

But there is no charger in the kit.The manufacturer recommends using any block with parameters of 5 in 2 A and the input of USB-A.

Design

The clock looks strict and solid. The case is quite large, but not overly massive, completely round screen goes well with elegant lines of loops, and continuous black allows you to combine a model with almost any clothing, including a business suit.True, the strap would not be silicone then, but - we will say about it yet.

Of the control elements on the case, only an oblong lower button, which can be assigned to different commands (by default it calls the training application), and a button-colestation.It can be twisted using as a zoom in the main menu or as a scroll of any lists, or you can press as a regular button.

The wheel rotates quite easily, pressed - elastic.Even more tightly pressing the lower button. But in the case of a wearable device, this is a plus-random presses due to clothing are excluded.

On the back, a block with sensors is visible, as well as the dynamics holes (four slots) and a microphone. The material of the entire surface is ceramics. And although it is clear that this is not visible to the user and others, but the realization that there is not plastic, but still something more noble-warms the soul.

The strap in the clock is silicone (more precisely - fluorelastomeric, as the manufacturer indicates), standard width (20 mm) and with standard mount. This means that there is no problem buying some kind of alternative option. There is also a Watch 3 version with a leather strap and a silver case.

In general, we note that the design of the watch made a very pleasant impression on us.And materials, and appearance, and convenience - everything is fine here.Perhaps the only thing you can complain about is not enough individuality. The watch can be confused with others. But - this is, rather, the question of their prevalence, which is too early to judge.

Screen

The clock is available in a single size - with the screen ∅1,43 ″.Resolution - 466 × 466, which gives 326 points per inch. The display is completely round, without dead zones. The glass is beautifully round to the faces (2.5D).

We conducted a detailed examination of the screen using measuring devices.Below is the conclusion of Alexei Kudryavtsev.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-clatter of a surface resistant to scratches.Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti -muffle properties of the screen are no worse than that of the Google Nexus 7 screen (2013), which we use as a reference device. For clarity, we give a photograph in which the white surface is reflected in the shut -off screens:

The screen of the watch is only slightly lighter (brightness according to photographs 107 versus 106 in Nexus 7). The double reflection is weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen. The outer surface of the watch screen has pronounced oleophobic (fat -repellent) properties (which is noticeably better than that of Nexus 7), so the traces of the fingers are removed significantly, and appear at a lower speed than in the case of ordinary glass. You can display an arbitrary image on the screen of the clock only in the form of a background of the dial, but this also made it possible to carry out a number of tests. When the White Field is withdrawn and with manual adjustment, the maximum brightness value registered by us was about 560 KD/m² (the same in the flashlight mode). Given the good anti -Great properties, this will make it possible to discern the image on the screen of a watch in conditions of strong lighting (a clear day on the street). The minimum value is 6 cd/m², that is, in complete darkness, the brightness will be reduced to a comfortable level. There is also a mode with automatic adjustment of brightness through the light sensor with a custom brightness level in current conditions. It is difficult to test this mode, since the measuring device partially blocks the light sensor. However, according to subjective estimates, this regime works adequately.

On the graph of the dependence of the brightness on time, a significant modulation with a frequency of 120 Hz is determined, and if desired in some images with a quick movement of the watch relative to the eyes, the stroboscopic effect can be detected. However, in fact, with normal use, flicker is not found, since the modulation phase differs in the screen area.

This screen uses OLED matrix-an active matrix on organic LEDs.A full -color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red (r), green (G) and blue (b) in equal quantities, which is confirmed by a fragment of microphotography:

For comparison, you can familiarize yourself with the Gallery of Microphotography of Screens used in mobile technology.

The spectra is typical for OLED - the areas of primary colors are well separated and have the form of relatively narrow peaks, cross -country mixing is practically absent:

Accordingly, the coverage is noticeably wider than the SRGB, it is even wider than DCI-P3.

Therefore, typical images (with SRGB coverage) on the watch screen have increased saturation:

The color temperature of the white and gray field is approximately 7800 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of a completely black body (ΔE) is about 4 units. The color balance is acceptable. Black color is just black at any corner. It is so black that the contrast parameter in this case is not applicable. With a perpendicular look, the uniformity of the White Field is excellent. The screen is characterized by magnificent viewing angles with a much lower brightness drop when looking at the screen at an angle compared to the LCDs, but at large corners the white slightly goes into blue. In general, the screen quality is very high.

Connecting to the smartphone and connecting ESIM

The clock is compatible with devices on iOS and on Android. However, in the first case, partial compatibility. In particular, you will not have the opportunity to install applications through Huawei Health and manage music reproduction. In addition, when conjugating with the iPhone, the action sequence is not as simple as with Huawei models. After your watch is found by the Apple smartphone, it is proposed to connect them through “settings” / Bluetooth. Moreover, if you had already connected the watch with this smartphone earlier, and then did the reset, then before connecting again, you need to click the “forget” on the lines of Huawei Watch 3 in the Bluetooth menu. Then, accordingly, find the clock among the new Bluetooth devices, and only then to “make friends” of the clock with the clock. In general, the scheme is somewhat confusing and not very obvious.

Great plus Huawei Watch 3 - the ability to use Russian operators ESIM.We tested the model with ESIM MTS.It is necessary to connect it to the clock through the Huawei Health application, scanning the QR code on a leaflet with a SIM card.

And there is an interesting nuance. After scanning the QR code, you will have a choice in the application which number to use. There will be two numbers/operator: the one that you use now in the smartphone, and the new one is ESIM.It would seem logical to choose a new one.But if you do this, then it will only be added to your smartphone, and an attempt to add it to the clock will end with such a warning.

Accordingly, with the initial setting, it is necessary to choose your previous (main) number so that the new one connects to the clock. Then you can call from the clock and accept calls completely independently of the smartphone. That is, in fact, you will have a full -fledged phone on the arm.You can even dial the number with numbers if you do not have it in contacts.

When the clock is in touch with the smartphone (well, that is, it is not far and Bluetooth is turned on on it), they will call them through it.Watch 3 will use their own cell module only if they lose their connection with the “base” - probably such a scheme is selected to save charge.

Watch functionality

We have already noted that Huawei Watch 3 is one of the most functional models of the smart watches that we met. In addition to standard options - training, tracking of sleep, alarm clock, timer, pulsomer, music management, etc. - there is such an extremely rare possibility as regular automatic measurement of SPO2 - the amount of oxygen in the blood (you should not confuse one -time measurements at the user's command, which are now available in almost all new wearable devices). In addition, the clock constantly measure the surface temperature of the skin. All data is unloaded to the Huawei Health application.

The quality of the SPO2 measurement pleased us, the results were quite believable, and without a strong scatter. More precisely, the scatter is within the framework of the norm for a healthy person, from 95% to 100%. But with the temperature of the surface of the skin, everything is not so clear. In a certificate to the application, the manufacturer reports: “At a regular room temperature, the skin temperature on the wrist should be in the range of 32-34 degrees Celsius.” Several questions arise at once. The first and the main thing: why are the infrared meters that are now used everywhere in connection with pandemia, show the temperature in the region of 36.6 degrees on a healthy person, how should it be, and the clock is 32-34 degrees? We conducted tests: indeed, when measurements, the Gmini GM-IRT-860D’s contactless thermometer, the values were correct, while the clock showed 1-3 degrees lower. The second question is: why is the spread of standard temperature values when measuring for hours is so great? Say, if we assume that our 36.6 is 34 degrees “sentries”, then how can it be 32 degrees?

Theoretically, this option can be used as reference, if you count from the usual average value for you.Suppose, after a few days of wearing hours, you see that your average temperature is 34.2 degrees. So, if one day you see 36 degrees on an hour, then you should be worried and measured by a normal thermometer. But still I would like a more clear understanding of how the thermometer works in the clock and how its results are then interpreted.

Further, on the clock, of course, you can change dials.Including third -party developments are also available. But when connecting with the iPhone, you will only have those that are free, while on Android - and paid too.

There is no application store on the iPhone. As we have already noted, the possibility of installing third -party applications is one of the main signs of a full -fledged operating system, and in the case of Harmony OS, everything is in order. That's just the applications themselves in the store at the time of testing there were nothing - 41, and many of them are very dubious, glow, with a strange description and incorrect work. But you need to understand that the device was just on sale, and the developers simply did not have time to pay attention to it, and the user base is still small.

But what could be fixed even at the start is the oddity with Appgallery application on the clock itself. An attempt to enter into it is given out by either a black screen or a warning that the service is not available in this region. So at the moment, the installation of applications is available only through a smartphone

A big plus of hours is a wide selection of training. There are “skis” (apparently, we mean skiing), and “skiing”, “snowboarding”, “bicycle”, and “swimming in a pond” ... In total in a standard set - 20training, one of them is “running courses”, where 13 options are presented. However, if you click on “set up”, we will see a menu where dozens of sports are presented. In total, more than 100 modes are obtained.By our sensation, the set is exhaustive.

We checked a bicycle ride and swimming in a pond.

In both cases, the clock involved GPS and quite accurately fixed movements, and also monitored all the parameters of activity. For example, in the case of cycling, these are rises, and when swimming is swolf (efficiency) and style.

Several nuances. After completing the training in water, vibration is automatically turned on, pushing water from the openings of the clock. And during training, upon reaching a certain threshold (for example, 5 km), the clock begins to read out your indicators. And this is quite strange when suddenly a male voice is heard from your clock, in English something shouting for a long time. And the clock can automatically recognize six types of training - including walking and running.

In general, Huawei Watch 3 is a great choice for sports and campaigns. In addition to the listed here there is a barometer and a compass, so that in terms of equipment they are comparable to professional sports models.

We complete the conversation about the functionality with a description of the interface of the operating system.Although the OS is new, its logic is completely identical to the usual one.The main screen is a dial, a long press on it allows you to choose other dials.Smiffling to the right - the movement between widgets (activity, pulse, spo2, skin temperature).

Pressing the rotating button opens the application menu.Using it, you can increase (bring) or reduce the icons.

Systeming on top opens the menu of quick settings, where a quite familiar set of options, as well as information about the battery and connections (NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE).Smiffing from below - the latest notifications.

The text of Russian -speaking notifications is displayed correctly, but if the message is long, it will not be able to read it completely. And the last strangeness, which is likely to upset developers in: there are no possibilities of removing screenshots yet.

Autonomous work

When it comes to autonomy of smart watches with many sensors, modes and settings, you have to denote only the frames, and very wide.Indeed, during autonomous work it will influence, for example, whether the cell module is used, whether the constant monitoring of the pulse, temperature, and the level of oxygen in the blood is turned on, and whether the functions “important on the screen” are activated. In addition, with smartphones on Android Watch 3 watches work longer than with iOS devices.

With the biometric sensors turned on (pulse, oxygen in the blood), with Wi-Fi and active ESIM, as well as with a moderate number of received notifications, the gadget works only more than more than more than a day.If we use training, activating GPS, phone calls and some third-party applications-even less. From morning to evening it will reach, but at night you still have to put on charging. We tried to turn on Alwayson, and with one training lasting 25 minutes, hours discharged 40% in less than four hours.

Charging is not fast. When connecting to a power supply 5 in 2 A, the process goes more than two hours. Moreover, the charge process goes evenly, that is, in an hour the gadget will be charged by about 50%, and this may not be enough even for use (active) during the working day.

conclusions

In the official online store, the manufacturer offers hours in the usual version (not Pro) for 30 thousand rubles.Huawei Watch 3 has at least one undeniable trump card: ESIM support in Russia. For those who are important to have telephone capabilities in the clock, this may be a decisive factor.Well, the weakest place of the model is the situation with third -party applications. And it’s too early to say whether something will change radically in six months or a year, although the assortment of application for smartphones in the Appgallery company managed to increase quite quickly.

Perhaps, from the point of view of price ratio and characteristics, not even a regular model looks more attractive, but Pro: the titanium case and sapphire glass certainly cost overpayments of 7000 rubles.
